Former New York City Mayor David Dinkins

Full Interview

Dinkins on the importance of Black Lives Matters:

“I think it’s significant in that it forces a discussion. Just like peaceful demonstrations may be an inconvenience for some it oughtn’t be because that’s how you shine the light on the misdeeds. So, Black Lives Matter may not please everybody and some might disagree with it and say ‘All Lives Matter’—and of course all lives do matter—police officers’ lives matter, I might add, so one could argue that Blue Lives, meaning blue uniforms, of course, they matter too. But the fact is that too often, weekly at very least, somewhere in this nation you’re going to read or hear about a police officer taking the life of some black, who really should not have been shot at all, much less killed.”

Dinkins on President Obama’s legacy regarding race:

“I don’t think the President bears any responsibility for all the bad things that are going on now around the country and blacks losing their lives to police officers who are jumpy and fire too quickly.”
